The following letter came to my inbox. I believe that the warning it carries is important so I wrote for, and received, permission to republish it here.
Please note the call to action at the bottom of the letter. We CAN do something to protect our rights - and if we don't...

Dear Marte ,
The FDA and the big drug companies are at it again...
They’re trying to make natural compounds illegal. If they have their way, you’ll have no choice but to use the more expensive and more dangerous drugs...and health care practitioners who supply you with those natural alternatives will be breaking the law.
This means federal regulators, not your own doctor, will be the ones making some of the most important decisions affecting your health. I think we should all take action now to prevent this – before it’s too late.
I’m talking about a treatment option I use in my medical practice every day – real hormones to replace hormones lost with age. Many call this “Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy” but I resist this term because it is redundant. If it’s a real hormone it has to be bio-identical by definition.
Real hormone therapy makes use of natural compounds that help your body combat the many of the negative changes that happen with age in both men and women, including lowered sex drive, muscle loss and decreased bone density, even loss of memory and energy.
It’s also far safer than conventional “FDA-approved” hormone replacement therapy (HRT). That’s because there aren’t actually real hormones in HRT drugs. The big moneymaking brands like Premarin, Prempro, and Provera – expensive prescription drugs for post-menopausal women – are not exactly the same as the natural mixtures of hormones that occur in your body. They are either laboratory produced or derived from animal hormones then chemically altered to prevent your liver from being able to readily remove them from your bloodstream.
Putting them into your body’s a roll of the dice, because nothing like them was ever supposed to be in your body in the first place. In fact, they don’t actually “replace” anything.
Real hormones, on the other hand, are indistinguishable from the hormones your body makes at the molecular level. Even better, they can be custom dosed to meet your body’s individual needs.
That’s because it depends on a practice called “compounding.” All this means is that a pharmacist can customize both the dose and combination of ingredients to meet the specialized requirements of a given patient’s prescribed treatment.
Suppose I examine you and decide you need 10 mg of a heart drug, plus about 200 mg of CoQ10...but the smallest pills the drug companies make are 50 mg, and they don’t come in combination with CoQ10 at all. I’ll just phone up a compounding pharmacist and have them make your customized blend. It’s not only better for you – it’s also cheaper, since you don’t have to pay the full price for a prescription dose you don’t need.
Real hormones from natural plant sources have to be customized in the same way, since hormones are very powerful and each patient’s needs are different. I’ve used them with great success in my own medical practice. But it has to be done correctly. Even small doses in the wrong direction will undermine the treatment’s effectiveness.
So the drug companies’ completely unnatural, “one-size-fits-all” model of synthetic drugs for “hormone replacement therapy” doesn’t make much sense. And it’s dangerous.
These simple facts seem to have escaped the government experts. Or maybe they don’t care. In a series of warning letters to compounding pharmacies across the country in early January, the FDA ordered doctors and pharmacists to stop telling patients it’s a safer treatment option than drugs – they suggest that it’s a “marketing” tool instead of an accurate description.
If they don’t obey, the FDA’s threatening to seize products – and even shut them down. This would deny hundreds of thousands of men and women access to many compounded real hormones and effectively put this compounding out of reach as a treatment option.
In case you’re wondering what would make government regulators – and the drug companies that stand behind them – launch an all-out assault on natural alternatives, the answer’s simple: money.
Drug companies can’t patent a bio-identical substance. In fact, they can’t patent any natural substance. So in this case they’ve invented synthetic hormones whose molecular structures are intentionally different from your own. It enables them to jack up profits...at the expense of your health. And as I pointed out earlier, compounding saves you money at the drug companies’ expense.
A lot is at stake here: your right to choose the treatment that’s best for you and your doctor’s right to provide it.
Please take action now. You’ll find a number of things to do right away to fight this latest attack on sound medical practice at www.healthfreedom.net. Click on “FDA Attacks Bio-identical Hormones” under the “Take Action” section on the lower left-hand side.

To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, MD
P.S. If you think your support won’t really make a difference, think again: last year, the same group I just linked you to successfully beat back the efforts of a few powerful, drug company-backed Senators to introduce the so-called “Safe Drug Compounding Act of 2007” into Congress. That law would have also outlawed compounding and BHRT. The support of people like you made the difference.
